What is Refractive Lens Exchange?
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), also known as Clear Lens Replacement, is the same procedure as cataract surgery but for refractive purposes (to correct nearsightedness, astigmatism and/or presbyopia or reading vision), before a cataract development to the point of medically neccessary removal. Just as in cataract surgery, RLE safely and successfully replaces the eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens in order to improve your vision. Patients have the same options for lenses as with cataract surgery. Click here to review those options. The best part is, when you have RLE, you will never encounter cataracts, and this will be your corrected vision for the rest of your life!
An Alternative to LASIK
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) differs from LASIK in that it replaces the lenses rather than reshaping the cornea. Unlike LASIK, Refractive Lens Exchange can be used to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism as well as presbyopia or reading vision, making it a truly multi-faceted and versatile option for people looking to improve their vision at all distances.
For patients in their 50’s or 60’s RLE may be an ideal choice to live life with the freedom from glasses and contacts.

Things to consider when deciding between LASIK or RLE
At what distance do you spend most of your time?

Far, like driving or sporting activities? LASIK may be sufficient for most of your day.

Intermediate, like computer work? Near, for small print or working on numbers on a computer screen? RLE may be a better option.
